A collectable compact disc-package released at the turn-of-the-millennium, on the "Kleos Classics" series of the New York state label, "Helicon". The content, are nineteen "Cabaret Songs from Paris to Berlin", under the collective title, "Farewell to Boheme" - as performed by soprano Jody-Karin Applebaum, backed by the pianist Marc-Andre Hamelin, in late-1999 / early-2000 recordings made in Philadelphia (a city in the north-eastern U.S. state, of Pennsylvania). In all, more than fifteen composers, from the Late-19C and / or Early-20C, have their works recited, of whom the best known are possibly, the Germans Kurt Weill & Bertolt Brecht, and the Frenchmen Erik Satie & Georges Bizet. 1) "Ballade du Chat Noir" by A. Bruant ; 2) "A Saint-Lazare" by Bruant ; 3) "A Saint-Ouen" by Bruant, arr. Hamelin ; 4) "Le Verger" words L. Xanrof, music G. Lemaire ; 5) "Toutou" words Bruant, music C. Cuvillier ; 6) "Chez le docteur" words V. Hyspa, music E. Satie ; 7) "Je te veux" words H. Pacory, music Satie ; 8) "La Diva de l'Empire" words Bonnaud & Bles, music Satie ; 9) "Isoldina" by C. Doucet ; 10) "Complainte de la Seine" words M. Magre, music K. Weill ; 11) "Youkali" words R. Fernay, music Weill ; 12) "Chopinata" by Doucet ; 13) "Abschied von der Boheme" words von Wangenheim, music W. Heymann ; 14) "Gesetzt den Fall" by F. Hollaender ; 15) "Es regnet" by Weill ; 16) "Nannas Lied" words B. Brecht, music K. Weill ; 17) "Es wird die neue Welt geboren!" words L. Renn, music S. Wolpe ; 18) "Uber den Selbstmord" words Brecht, music H. Eisler ; 19) "An allem sind die Juden schuld!" words Hollaender, music G. Bizet. The cover opens into a 20-page, EX- condition, mono - except for the Outside Covers - booklet (sample Photo Two) containing : Fascinating, introductory, two-page 2000 essay, by Applebaum herself ; More than ten pages devoted to the songs - with several paragraphs per song -, by anon. ; Brief, contemporary biographies of Applebaum & Hamelin ; Nice, half-page mono still of the two performers (Photo Three), again by anon. ; Brief biographies (one paragraph each) of eleven of the composers (all texts in English-language only, sorry - apart from the original titles in either German or French, which are then translated into English). (Reverse Cover is the best place to consult for a succinct, timed tracklisting, which also lists dates of composition and of course the composers! The Reverse also has the Front Cover's lovely artwork-credit, "Au Cafe dit l'Absinthe" 1875, by none-other-than Degas) The CD is in EX- condition.
