Ordnance Survey Sheets 35-46 Manufacturer - Edward Stanford of Charing Cross. Printed from electrotypes, we have here 11 large folding ordnance survey maps of Great Britain. There is no sheet 38 present in the box. These maps were published in the first half of the nineteenth century. Contributors include: Colonel Mudge Major Colby J. W. Foggett J. A. Harrison With The Writing by Eben. Bourne Many of these maps state that they were engraved at the Drawing Room or at The Ordnance Map Office In The Tower of London by Benji Baker & Assistants. Each sheet measures: 6.5 x 9.5" folded 26 x 37.5" unfolded These sheets are housed in their original brown calf book box with envelope-style closure. Each map has marbled paper covers and an index label to be referenced alongside that on the lid. Each map is 16 sections dissected and laid on linen with a scale of one inch to a statue mile. These maps are in very good condition. The paper is bright, the text is legible and the details are clear at all points. There is very little by the way of marking or staining. The reverse side of the linen is in some cases slightly yellowed and discoloured but this is not reflected on the paper side. There are no open tears or any loss of material. Some sheets do have some pencil annotation outside of their borders. This annotation in no way interferes with or detracts from the map. It could be erased without causing damage. These maps fold in and out with ease and are by no means unmanageable. The book-style case has protected these maps well. The leather has recorded some scuff marks in its surface and there is evidence of rubbing at the edges and the corners. The flap used to close this box remains attached. Concerning Sheet 38: This case is labelled sheets 35-46. Sheet 38, however, is not present inside the box. We initially concluded that this was an incomplete set - however there is also no sheet 38 referenced on the index label on the case's lid (a photograph of this label will be included). From this we can conclude that either, yes, the set is incomplete and 38 is missing OR that there never was a sheet 38 in the first place. The maps fit perfectly snugly inside the case (please see photograph) and there never would have been room for another map. (?) These are used maps in very good condition. For whatever reason, there is no sheet 38 present. (PLEASE NOTE: Due to both the weight and value of this item, it will be dispatched by courier.)
