Black Pioneers: Images Of The Black Experience On The North American Frontier
Merchant: Oxfam
Merchant's Category: Media> Books
Folding to the top right corners of several pages. Too often in American culture's collective imagination it is white men who "won the West" - with perhaps a few (white) women to tend the bars and the children. The role of African American men and women has been largely ignored or overlooked. Black Pioneers remedies this historical gap. Beginning with the earliest available examples from the mid-1800s, Ravage lays out a visual treat of nearly 200 archival photographs to demonstrate that the work and experiences of African American politicians, soldiers, doctors, ranchers, deputies, nannies, midwives, and miners was crucial to westward expansion and to the development of the communities in which they lived. Black Pioneers challenges our stereotypes of the West's population, presenting rare images of a more diverse frontier than we might have otherwise imagined.
