Eight Views of Old Chelsea - Henry & Walter Greaves, with introduction and notes by Michael Parkin. Published by W. H. Newson Holding Ltd., Large-format landscape paperback, 1975. In Celebration of Architectural Heritage Year, Nineteen Hundred and Seventy Five. Unpaginated. These are pen-and-ink-wash, or pencil-and-colour-wash, monochrome plates, made in the 1860s, of roads in 'old Chelsea'. Walter and Henry Greaves were a father and son; the father, Walter, was born in Chelsea in the mid-nineteenth century, when it was a riverside village separated from Kensington by green fields and connected by country lanes. Chelsea, for which the main thoroughfare was the river, rather than the King's Road, retained its village atmosphere until the King's Road started to 'swing' in the 1950s. This is a large-format book with only a small number of pages. A paragraph of description is written for each picture; they are shown first, after the introduction, then the pictures are shown in the same order. A number, 544, is printed on the back cover. Condition: Good. This work is presented in a similar format to an artist's portfolio: landscape orientation, printed on beige card, with tape over the spine. The edges are tanned with a few grubby marks on the cover.
