Enemies Of Promise By Cyril Connolly (hardback)
Merchant: Oxfam
Merchant's Category: Media> Books
In his introduction to the 1948 edition of Enemies of Promise, Cyril Connolly wrote that it was 'first published in 1938 as a didactic enquiry into the problem of how to write a book which lasts ten years. That limit is now reached and the book has survived...' Forty years on, Enemies of Promise endures: a masterpiece of English autobiography lurking within what is possibly the finest account of becoming a writer staying one has every written. It sets out the struggles, the traps for the unwary (into which the author himself has occasionally stumbled), the elation of success however evanescent, and above all Cyril Connolly's love of words, of other languages, of the literary life, and the inter-relationship of a writer's personal circumstances and his oeuvre. Reviewing the book on its first appearance, Desmond MacCarthy wrote that Connolly's pen might be 'dipped in the ink of Stendhal and Proust'. Condition is good. All pages are present, legible, crisp and clear. The dust jacket is present, though subject to some shelf wear. There are marks on the internal pages, in particular the outside of the pages, and some minor issues with the binding.
