Fun with Hiragana Workbook by Kyoko Hijirida & Satoko Dung "Fun with Hiragana" is a method of teaching the hiragana syllabary with as much pleasure, as little pain, and as much retention as possible. It involves three different elements: the teacher's large flash cards for use in class drills, a smaller set of the same cards for each student, and a workbook. The common element, and the essential teaching device in all three is the use of pictured objects, animals or concepts that the student is thoroughly familiar with, to establish a mnemonic association, both auditory and visual, with the hiragana character to be recognized, read and written. Along with each picture is a little jingle ("To is for Toby touching his nose"), as a means of getting at the sound. The auditory correspondences are as close and exact as the differing sound systems of Japanese and English will permit. The visual appearance of the hiragana character is embodied in the picture given to it (in the case of "to," the picture is of Toby touching a nose that is the image of the hiragana character being described in the jingle). Along with the class flashcards and those given to the student, there is a workbook for explanations and practice. Harue Summersgill drew the pictures and wrote the accompanying jingles, with contributions by Satoko Dung and Kyoko Hijirida. The practice exercises that make the up Workbook were devised by Hijirida and Dung Some creasing to front cover and inscribed inside see photos for condition
