First edition. 281pp. Hardback (faded red cloth covers with gilded titling and illustration on the front ; 16 full page illustrations by H.R. Millar ; in Poor condition, with three loose pages, all illustrations ; faded and marked covers and some pages ; foxed ; lightly tanned ; dusty edges ; otherwise complete) A first edition of one of famous Edwardian woman's children's author E. Nesbit's classic stories for children (and adults). A very interesting writer, poet, political activist, and co-founder of the Fabian Society, Edith Nesbit (1858-1924) also wrote The Railway Children, The Treasure Seekers, Five Children and It. She often wrote about ordinary families in SE London and their adventures, and was an influence on Arthur Ransome and C.S. Lewis among others. The book is complete, if in poor condition, and has some delightful illustrations throughout
