Holmes, Chemistry And The Royal Institution

When A Study in Scarlet was published, in 1887, and introduced the world to Sherlock Holmes, the enduring appeal of this most famous of detectives could not have envisaged. What is it about Holmes that puts this fictional creation above his contemporaries ? There is, of course, the brilliant characterisation by Conan Doyle, the elements of humour and glimpse of Victorian Life in London. Furthermore, Holmes was one of the first detectives to use the "scientific method" in his investigations. Holmes, as a formidable chemist in his own right, would have undoubtedly been interested in the work of such notables as Sir Humphry Davy, Michael Faraday and John Tyndall, who were all "Directors" of the Royal Institution of Great Britain and at the forefront of scientific research. This book presents a collection of essays which assesses the chemical work of Holmes, along with his relationship with the Royal Institution of Great Britain. Finally, new evidence helps to throw light on the famous unchronicled case involving "the politician, the lighthouse and the trained cormorant". The book is in very good condition there are some slight signs of shelf wear to the corners.
