Introduction to Psychology by Kenneth Gray The text places the content of scientific psychology into a personal context that students find more accessible and meaningful than other textbooks. The personal tone and many real life examples make it easier for students to connect psychology to their own lives, which helps them to understand, remember, and use it. It is a book that talks to students and treats the field of scientific psychology with respect, but does not take itself too seriously. The book is organized differently from traditional textbooks to take advantage of students prior conceptions about psychology. Instead of dividing the content into 14 to 18 chapters devoted to a series of general topics (for example, a chapter on memory, a chapter on learning, and so on), the book is divided into six units based on student-oriented themes. Although the themes were selected to be relevant to students lives, they do evoke the traditional psychologist s organization of subfields and topics. Thus, the text leads students to understand the traditional organization of the field by beginning with an organization that is closer to the one that they bring to the class. Research on how people learn is clear. Students learn best when instruction builds on the students preexisting and naive knowledge about a subject. This book takes this realization about learning to heart. Ken Gray received his PhD. in cognitive psychology from the University of Michigan in 1993. After positions on the marketing faculty at the Kellogg Graduate School of Management at Northwestern University and in research for the Leo Burnett advertising agency, he returned to teaching psychology at the College of DuPage in 1997, where he is currently Professor of Psychology. His students have nominated him for the College of DuPage Outstanding Faculty Award in 2001, 2002, 2003, 2004, 2006, 2007, and 2009. Ken is the former National President of Psi Beta, the National Honor Society in Psychology for Community Colleges, as well as the co-advisor of the College of DuPage chapter. He has given over 25 presentations on teaching and learning at regional and national conferences since 2000. In good condition with clean pages inside. Shows some signs of shelf wear to the edges, cover and spine.
