Sir James Gildea. In Memoriam. King Edward VII. The Peacemaker. Eyre & Spottiswoode, 1914. Large Quarto. Fair to Good cond. Elaborate cloth cover with title in gilt with gilt borders and crown. Similar spine with as an addition to the tile Vol.1. No evidence of a successor. This handsome cover is not clean and fading. The corners are scuffed. The binding of both front and back is fragile and loose. Inscribed neatly in ink and dated Xmas 1916 on fep. Many ill. with plates in b &w all in the 2nd and 3rd sections except for Frontispiece reproduction in b & w of Queen Victoria with the future King as a boy together with a miniature of him as a child. In 3 parts with Appendix and publisher's ads. Letter to Queen Alexandria indicating that this book was a commissioned by her and it was planned as Vol. 1 497pp. Given the circumstances this is bound to be hagiographical. The bulk of the book is made up of A Summary of the Events of the Life of King Edward VII, 1941-1910 which makes up Part 1 together with Genealogies. Part 2 consists of 50 pages of fine reproductions of Portraits of Edward, Statues and Medallions. Part 3 consists of Coronation and other Memorials. Parts 2 and 3 are mainly pictorial. There is both a Classified and General Index and a short Appendix of Royal Homes for Widows and Daughters etc. Sir James Gildea ( 1838 - 1920) was an Irish army officer who was best known as a Philanthropist.
