Vol looks at William Hogarth, Sir Joshua Reynolds and Thomas Gainsborough; vol 2 Benjamin West, James Barry, William Blake, John Opie, George Morland, Edward Bird and Henry Fuseli. Vol 1 offers an introduction, before both vols discuss in depth the lives and painting techniques of each. These are 'word pictures', enlightening and entertaining. Total pages 710. Each volume, in a series published by William Tegg & Co., is bound in decorative red cloth boards, with gilt lettering and banding on the spine. They have some signs of shelf wear and a little soiling. The binding is holding well, though the front hinge of vol 1 is cracked. The end papers are clean; a few pages have some browning, and the page edges have hints of foxing. However, the vast majority of the pages are completely clean; the books may not have been much read. For their age, they are in very good condition.
