The Poetical Works of Henry Wadsworth Longfellow The soft dark red leather cover does show signs of age yet once inside we find a lovely book in remarkably good condition. The page edges have a smooth gilt border and very little fading. The font is small but readable which means the lucky buyer is getting lots to read on the book's 630 pages. American Henry Longfellow lived for 75 years from 1807 until 1882. Perhaps his most famous poem, Paul Revere's Ride was also his most intriguing. In it he describes a gallant ride through the night by rebel Paul Revere at the time of the US War of Independence around the 1770's. Modern writer Bernard Cornwell book 'The Fort' explains that Paul Revere was actually a coward and scoundrel who badly let down his general, Peleg Wadsworth, who was none other than Longfellow's grandfather. So why Henry Longfellow chose to create a hero out of a man who shamed his grandfather remains a mystery. Writing in later life from his home in George Washington's Cambridge, Massachusetts' former headquarters must have steeped him in Revolutionary War history and making up fictitious heroes was more important than historical fact. This book will certainly be an aid in any further research into this fascinating episode of American history.
