The inaugural James Cameron Memorial Lecture was given in 1987 by the legendary Ben Bradlee, editor of the Washington Post during the Watergate affair, and since that stellar beginning the annual lecturer has consistently come from the Premier League of media professionals and commentators. In bringing together edited versions of the lectures from Bradlee's examination of 'Why governments lie' to Tony Benn on 'The media and the political process' in 2001, Media Voices provides a kaleidoscope of perspectives on the role of the media in the modern age - and in particular on three central themes which continue to resonate: the relationship between the media and political system, the degree to which public broadcasting has been sacrificed on the altar of market forces, and the running tension between protection of privacy and the freedom of the press.
