'Panorama' by Charles Graves. Ivor Nicholson & Watson, 1932. Hardback, 318 pp. Somewhat grubby orange cloth boards, but the text is clear and crisp enough throughout. No dust-jacket. Fair condition. Charles Graves was the younger brother of the much more famous Robert. In his day he was a very successful journalist, however, and almost certainly made much more money than any of his siblings. Judging by these lively and entertaining essays, assembled, one presumes, from articles previously published in the press, he was very good at his job. ' "What about a few good-looking plover eggs?" Blackburne suggested, ignorant that they had been against the law for nearly three years. Gently I disabused him of the idea. The waiter remembered him very well. "You have been away a long time, sir," he said reproachfully . . .' But my favourite essay is the one entitled 'Flotsam and Jetsam of London: the Down-and-Outs--and their Rescuers'. George Orwell, eat your heart out. (Just for the record, 'Panorama' came out in 1932, whereas 'Down and Out in Paris and London' was published in the following year.) '"Blast them trams. Yer don't know wot a draught they causes as they go by yer. These 'ere benches ain't got solid backs. It's wicked, yus it is, the way the wind goes through yer." He sucked his tea noisily . . .' And there's much more in the same invigorating vein. Highly recommended.
