Parade In Pairs [rare, 1st Edition, Dust Jacket By Pat Marriott]

Contrasting young people from two or more social strata, and describing the results of their intermingling, the author created a highly original, well-informed, humane and 'contemporary' (i.e. late 1950s/early 1960s) story, debating the impact of two West Indians and their girl-friends on a South London working-class home - and at the same time presenting a similar 'upper-class' story set in Oxford. The two tales are linked by one character, Sheila, and the subjects of class, social movement, and race dealt with in a masterly manner. D. A. Nicholas Jones (b.1931) spent his National Service in Hong Kong, and later visited several European countries and most of the important Middle and Far East ports (he served on trawlers, salvage vessels and Thames passenger boats). 'Parade in Pairs' was his first (and only?) novel, written when he was 24 years old. Pat Marriott (1920-2002) was an artist and illustrator, perhaps best known for her work with Joan Aiken, a writer of children's books. Our copy of this scarce book is in very nice condition, with a tidy (unclipped) dust jacket which shows only few signs of wear and age (slight grubbiness to the white rear portion, some very minor chips and wear to corners). The book itself is bound in blue cloth with a black spine and a contrasting line at the midpoint all round the cover; title etc in blue lettering on the black spine. It shows no external signs of wear or use, and the interior is similarly clean and bright, appearing unused. Page tops coloured red, with slight 'bleeding' to tops of some pages. Jacket design by Pat Marriott.
