Purpose-built for polar work including strong raking storm for riding up over and crushing ice 1901-1904; research expedition to the Antarctic with Captain Scott R. N. in command. Crew 38 plus 5 scientists. 1905; purchased by the kudson's bay company. 1923; purchased by the discovery committee and refitted, 1925-1927; research shop into the habits of whales. 1928; refitted, 1929-1931; 2rd expedition to the Antarctic under fit Douglas Mawson, 1931-1937; laid up at London, 1937-1955; used as a training ship for sea scouts, 1955; handed over to admiralty and used as a training ship, 1960-; become Royal Naval recruiting headquarters.
