The Arts of Painting and Sculpture - Roger Fry. Published by Victor Gollancz Ltd., Hardback (no dust jacket) 1932. This book covers the history of painting and sculpture from all over the world, from the Palaeolithic era to the present day (at time of writing): 1932. The author, Roger Fry (1866 - 1934) was an artist himself, a critic and academic. Establishing his reputation as a scholar of the Old Masters, he became an advocate of more recent (at the time) developments in French painting, to which he gave the name Post-Impressionism. Sadly there are no illustrations, but as this work is 91 years old at the moment, it is interesting to see an example of art historiography from that time. Condition: Poor. Tanned and foxed throughout, with pencil or biro markings on a number of the pages. The paper covering of the spine is almost completely detached from one side of the spine. General wear, tear and fading present. Some handwriting in ink on the front free end paper.
