Merchant's Category: Media> DVDs & Videos
Triple bill of documentaries about the aircraft and pilots that fought during the Second World War. 'The Battle of Britain' (2010), presented by Ewan McGregor and his brother Colin, explores the air campaign that took place in 1940 between the German Luftwaffe and the Royal Air Force. The brothers fly vintage planes, meet the few veterans still alive today and discover the strategies behind the battle. 'First Light' (2010) is a made-for-TV documentary drama based on the life of British fighter pilot Geoffrey Wellum (Sam Heughan). As a teenager, Geoffrey became a member of the RAF's No. 92 Squadron and piloted a Spitfire, despite the fact he had had no previous flying experience. He was awarded a medal for his role in the fight against the Luftwaffe in the Battle of Britain but later suffered from a breakdown, caused by the loss of so many of his friends. Overcoming his depression, he survived through the trials of war and lived to tell his tale. The film includes footage of the real Geoffrey Wellum giving a first-hand account of his experiences. In 'Bomber Boys' (2012) Ewan and Colin take a look at the Bomber Command of World War II. With examples of real life experiences, the programme explores the RAF's operations over a six-year period, as well as the challenges it faced and the development of the Bomber Command. Meanwhile, Colin learns to fly a Lancaster bomber. Light wear to cardboard slipcase; DVDs in excellent condition.
