The Life And Letters Of William Cowper, Esq. With Remarks On Epistolary Writers. By William Hayley, Esq. A New Edition. Printed For J. Johnson & Co. (1812) 4 Volumes. These four hardcover volumes from 1812 are in good condition. There is the name of a previous owner written in a beautiful cursive hand on one of the first blank endpapers of volume one (please see photograph). There are no other internal markings or annotations present within these volumes. The text pages of these books are in remarkably good condition. The paper, for the most part, is clean and bright. The font is well-defined and the texts legible at all points. There is, of course, the odd blemish to the page but these do not appear particularly widespread. The endpapers are noticeably more discoloured (as is usually the case with books of this age), but the text pages themselves have fared well. The edges of the text blocks are in very good condition. They have tanned with age. The pages continue to sit together as if these books had not been read. They are free from creasing, crumpling and tearing. Externally, these books have marbled leather boards with delicate gilt stamped decoration around the edges. What will be immediately noticeable is that the front cover of each volume has become detached. The separations look relatively clean making these books good candidates for professional repair or recovering. The spine material is unfortunately cracked and chipped with areas of loss. Please see photographs for closer inspection. Despite the damage, the bindings of these books feel tight and there are no loose or missing pages. These are used books in good condition. Contents remain perfectly fit for study. (PLEASE NOTE: Due to the weight of these items, they will be dispatched by courier.)
