A scarce edition of this collection of works and biography of poet William Cowper. Taken from Cowper's private correspondence and edited by Rev. T.S. Grimshawe. "William Cowper was an English poet who was among the most popular poets of his time. He is credited with changing the direction of 18th century nature poetry by writing about scenes of every day life and the English countryside." (description taken from the web) Good, half-bound copy. 1849. 1st edition as a complete volume (previous editions had been in 8 volumes). 736 pp. Black leather spine with extensive gilt tooling, raised bands, and red title insert. Wear to the front spine edge has resulted in it partially detaching. Attractive and unusual marble board covers with some edgewear, bumping and wear on corners. Some signs of shaking, particularly to webbing of gutter in the front papers, but essentially, the binding remains good. End papers and block marbled. Darkening of top of block but otherwise very good. Some minor age discolouration to front and end papers but otherwise the text is clean and crisp. No marking noted. Containing b/w illustrations, being tissue-guarded. Due to value, a small delivery surcharge applies.
