Thomas Bewick: My Life
Merchant: Oxfam
Merchant's Category: Media> Books
Thomas Bewick, a famous wood engraver and author of A History of the Quadrupeds and A History of British Birds. This is an autobiography of this life with chapters on his childhood and young adulthood, with terrific character sketches of eccentric, half-literate peasants and weeks-long walking tours through the borders and the Scottish highlands. There are some rather heart-breaking moments too, one involving a hare whose leg was broken after it was caught, and then released again to give the dogs "more sport" (this disgusted Bewick), and another when Bewick as a boy hit a bird with a stone and spent hours of remorseful fascination turning over the beautiful creature in his hands. This is a Folio Society book whose box is missing.
