A very interesting and unusual publication from the Mid-Nineties, this is "A Century of Song", consisting of "A medley of styles in popular music since 1900", namely nine songs that nominally have words and music by the book's author, Kent (Bromley)-based Roy Dean (plus piano arrangements by Janet Bishop), although Dean wrote them in the traditions of popular music of the Early 20C, and sometimes borrowed lyrics from poetical, etc., sources ... The book was published by "Da Capo Music Ltd.", based in Bolton, Lancashire. (Photos One to Four give a brief visual guide to the product) 1) "I can't get Fat like Father" for baritone & piano (composed in Late-Victorian music hall style, c.1900). 2) "Beneath the Bajan Moon" for mezzo-soprano (or baritone) & piano (composed as a romantic ballad, in the manner of an Edwardian parlour song). 3) "Spring Weather" for baritone & piano (composed as an art song, after the fashion of English Georgian composers, of the 1910s. The text is in both English and French translations, and inspired by the poetry of "Charles, Duc d' Orleans", taken prisoner by the English after the Battle of Agincourt in 1415). 4) "Bromley Blues" for contralto & piano (lyrics originally composed by Dean, 'on-the-spot' for the famous U.S. jazz pianist Memphis Slim, at a concert in Ghana [Dean had an erstwhile career in the Diplomatic Service, travelling all over the world]) 5) "The Unwanted" for tenor (or soprano) & piano (lyrics inspired by a Cecil Day Lewis wartime poem of the same name, this is in the style of a traditional folk idiom). 6) "Flying Fish" for contralto & piano (composed in the style of the catchy rhythms of Caribbean calypsos, that became popular in the U.K. in the Fifties). 7) "Seven Days of Loving" for tenor & piano (somewhat in the style, of a sophisticated song in a modern stage musical, with a tune reminiscent of Sixties "rockish" elements). 8) "Queen of my Heart" for baritone & piano (arranged with added guitar chords by Janet Bishop, this one has it's origins in memories of Country & Western music of the Seventies!). 9) "Hymn to the Arts", a festival song for accompanied voices (this final song has music arranged by Christopher Field, instead of piano arrangements by Bishop. Composed by Dean, as an introduction to an arts festival).
