This rare, Fifties / Early-Sixties release - from the ever-desirable, "Philips"-label -, is quite a find ... It is a both a double-L.P. and a 18-page book! Featuring fine performances from The Metropolitan Opera House of New York, it stars the respected soprano Lily Pons, with the equally-respected tenor Richard Tucker ; while, The Orchestra of the Metropolitan Opera is conducted by Fausto Cleva (an almost-lifelong servant, of that particular opera house), and the choir is directed by Kurt Adler (who also worked for the New York Opera House, for thirty years). The material, is Italian genius Gaetano Donizetti's (1797-1848) legendary opera "Lucia di Lammermoor", concerning the loves (- contrasted with the necessary, marital-commitments -), of the titular Lucia : sister of Enrico Ashton, whose family fortunes can only be saved by Lucia marrying a suitable groom ... The physical characteristics of this item are, that : The eighteen L.P.-sized pages - plus the attached L.P. pouches -, are all ring-bound by an EX+ condition, red-binder (as is the case with many double-L.P. packages of this vintage, Side One backs onto Side Four, and Side Two backs onto Side Three - and, I have photographed one side for each disc, in Photos Two & Three). After the list of performance-credits, the next three pages (all non-numbered) are printed in the German language only, and would seem to concern : i) Donizetti's conception and composition of the opera, plus the premiere, audience / critical-receptions, etc. ; ii) Brief biographies of the main performers in this Fifties / Early-Sixties staging. HOWEVER, there are fourteen, numbered pages of the full libretto, printed in parallel original-Italian and translated-English & -German languages (i.e. three parallel columns on each page, sample Photo Four). Records graded visually to RRPG grades (SideOne/SideFour/...Two/...Three/ Book) VG+/VG/VG/VG/ VG.
