Some of the lead vocalists, were : tenor, Georges Thill as "Werther" ; mezzo-soprano, Ninon Vallin as "Charlotte" ; soprano, Germaine Feraldy as "Sophie" ; and, baritone, Marcel Roque as "Albert") An opportunity to hear a highly-thought-of, MONO recording of a 1935 staging of Jules Massenet's (1842-1912) "Werther" opera, the French composer's take on Johann Goethe's tale, of the impossible love between the eponymous "Werther" a poet, and "Charlotte", who is bound by family-convention to marry the duller "Albert". The backdrop of this lovely, four-act opera is 1780s Germany ... The product is a 3-L.P. box-set, released on the "EMI-His Master's Voice"-label, in 1978. (Photos Two to Four : Sides 1, 3 & 5) Included in the package, is a sumptuous, 28-page, EX condition, tri-colour (light-cream paper ; black type plus image-shading ; and, orange decoration to finish off) booklet - samples, Photos Five & Six -, containing : 1935 performance-credits ; Interesting, two-page essay on both Massenet and the "Werther" opera, by M. Tassart ; One-page synopsis, again by Tassart ; Impressive, fourteen-page libretto containing parallel verse, in both the English and French languages (all of the text in this booklet, is printed in both of those languages) ; Lots of quality stills, of subjects ranging from Massenet ... to illustrations ... to the 1935-staging's leading players.
