This is the thick cake board, measuring approx. 0.5 inches thick, commonly referred to in the cake decorating industry as a drum board. They are a more heavy duty board than regular 3mm or 4mm thick ones, and are designed to be able to carry heavier cakes, such as fruit cakes, and multi tiered wedding cakes. Drum boards that are two inches bigger than the largest tier are generally used. For example, if you are baking a 12 inch cake, you will need a 14 inch drum board. Wedding cakes have been used traditionally for almost as long as cakes have been baked. The modern wedding cake as we know it dates back to the late 19 th century, and can be commonly found with multiple tiers, and some can even range up to seven tiers tall! The need for thicker, stronger cake boards developed, in order to support cakes of this size. Cake drums are perfect for this, as it eliminates the need for a baker to have to glue together several thinner boards to achieve the strength required. This old practice often lead to odd shaped boards, and often non-edible glue was used, which could compromise the safety of the board in question. These cake boards are made from compressed wood, and covered with a food safe green foil, which lets cakes be placed upon this, without it touching the wood. This cake drum measures approximately 12mm thick. Cake boards can come in a variety of different sizes, shapes, and even thicknesses, meaning there is a cake board out there for your cake.
