A Child's History Of England
Merchant: Oxfam
Merchant's Category: Media> Books
As entertainingly written as one would expect from Dickens. "Intensely anti-monarchical and anti-aristocratic" (Oxford Dictionary of National Biography). It first appeared in instalments from January 1851 to December 1853 in "Household Words". There is no date on this edition but there is a Sunday School prize bookplate on the front pastedown dated Christmas 1899. It is bound in pale brown boards. The front cover is decorated with impressed print and designs (see photo) as is the spine. The title on both is printed on a gilt labels which have faded. The back cover has a black blind-stamped design. The covers have some discolouring and marks particularly on the back where there are white and dark marks. The covers also have corner-bumping, edgewear and crushing at he ends of the spine. The pastedowns and endpapers are discoloured and a child has scribbled on the front free endpaper (see photo). The pages are a little browned and some are dog-eared but the text on all is clean and bright. There is a tear on p. 16 (see photo) and brown marks on a few pages. Some marks on textblock edges. Cracked hinges at the front and back cover and at p. 208 but the book remains firmly bound.
