A Church As It Should Be - The Cambridge Camden Society And Its Influence
Merchant: Oxfam
Merchant's Category: Media> Books
Church attendance is a minority activity today, but there still remains a sense of what a church should look like, and how its clergy should dress and conduct themselves. Virtually every detail in this image, however, comes not from ancient tradition but from the innovations introduced under the influence of the Cambridge Camden Society in the nineteenth century. The Society was founded in 1839. Its famous journal, The Ecclesiologist, was published between 1841 and 1868 and combined scholarly articles with trenchant criticism. In 1879 the Society was refounded as the St Paul's Ecclesiological Society and for more than fifty years it published under that name. In 1937 it was again renamed, now as the Ecclesiological Society which it is still called. It has about 800 members today. In this substantial collection of fifteen academic essays, leading architectural historians review the history and achievements of the Ecclesiologists during the Camden period. There is also an introduction, postscript and index. A sequence of 87 good quality black and white photographs and a remarkable comprehensive appendix (pp. 359-452) contributed by Geoffrey Brandwood, listing every known member of the Society with their biographical and career details. A 'must' for anyone interested in church architecture, liturgy, and above all, the history of the Victorian church. Excellent pages, minor edge and jacket wear.
