This is a full size facsimile edition in two volumes of the first edition of Samuel Johnson's "A Dictionary of the English Language" which was published in 1755. It contains 40,000 entries and 116,000 illustrative quotations. Samuel Johnson (1709-1784) was a critic, poet, lexicographer and essayist and was a pre-eminent literary figure of the later 18th century. It is published by Longman, one of the dictionary's original publishers and is a true facsimile - full text size and in two volumes like the original. The dictionary is bound in Cabra red bonded leather with raised spin bands, foil blocking in old gold and dark green. The double volume slip case is in dark red library Buckram. In addition there are two specially commissioned introductory essays "The Genesis of Johnson's Dictionary" by Dr David Fleeman, a Fellow of Pembroke College, Oxford and "The Lexicographic Achievement of Johnson" by Dr Brian O'Kill.;A facsimile of "the Plan of a Dictionary of the English Language" by Samuel Johnson is included. Complete with slipcase and book rest. Very good condition for age and weight. - Slipcase bears most of the wear - Including peeling to the Buckram on the Fore-Edge Boards, general shelf wear to the edges and corners, some wear to the raised folds. - "The Genesis of Johnson's Dictionary" pamphlet has a 1cm tear to the front cover and first page. - Both pamphlets are slightly worn and yellowed, some discolouration.
