Hardback, 1989, The Strong Oak Press. First published in 1930 by William Heinemann. Boards in very good condition. Gilt to spine. Some shelf wear and discolouration to page block. Original owner's name inside front cover. Dust wrapper in good condition Carstairs' 'outstanding and much admired memoir' of his time serving on the Western Front with the Royal Artillery and the 3rd Grenadier Guards in the First World War. By claiming he was a Canadian (he was a US citizen) he obtained a commission in the British Army. He was awarded the M.C. and was severely wounded six days before the Armistice. This edition, which reproduces the original text complete, also has a specially commissioned introduction and chapter notes.
