Description from the back inside cover: "On 8 October 1919, six men met for lunch at Scott's Hotel in Melbourne. Their purpose was to discuss the possibility of forming a Scottish Society in Melbourne, whose functions would be to "foster Scottish sentiment and to maintain Scottish tradition in this community". The organisation that grew from this first meeting was known as The Melbourne Scots. In the early years of the society, members met socially for lunches, "smoke nights" and dinners. Now, the two major events on The Melbourne Scots calendar each year are dinners to mark the birthday of Scotland's national poet, Robert Burns, and Scotland's patron saint, St Andrew. This collection represents some of the after dinner speeches given on those special occasions. Among the contributors are Sir Robert Menzies, Malcolm Fraser, Sir Ninian Stephen, Sir Zelman Cowen, Reverend Dr Peter Hollingworth and Professor Geoffrey Blainey. It is hoped that this selection of papers from The Melbourne Scots will entertain, inform and keep alive the Goodly Heritage." This book is in as-new condition, free from highlighting, underlining or significant blemishes. The dust cover is in pristine condition.
