A Grand New And Original Burlesques Entitled Der Freischutz Or A Good Cast For A Piece
Merchant: Oxfam
Merchant's Category: Media> Books
This is a scarce collection of 9 burlesques bound together into one volume - probably done privately as no one publisher given. Each burlesque has a different printer's name on the bottom of it. The burlesques are as follows - Der Freischutz by F. C. Burnand, Esmerelda by Henry J. Byron; Medea by Robert B. Brough; Dinora under Difficulties by Brough; Tell! and the Strike of the Cantons by Francis Talfourd; William Tell by Byron; Maid and the Magpie or The Fatal Spoon by Byron; Romeo and Juliet Travestie by Andrew Halliday; Lady of Lyons by Byron. The book is bound in brown cloth. The spine has a split down one side (the front side) almost down to the bottom (all but 3 and a half cm), but the other side of the spine is intact. Also a couple of small chips from the top and tail spine area. It looks as if some kind of paper label has adhered at some point to the front and back of the book as the remains of it are still stuck on there. Internally the pages are mostly in good condition. The bound burlesques are listed at the front - handwritten in ink and stuck in though this page is very loose now and almost unstuck. Previous owner's name written on the front pastedown, and a previous bookseller's note in pencil on the front endpaper. The pages are mostly clean and in good order though there are a few pencil marks in the margin on a couple of the plays. There seem to be a couple of pages torn out at the end of Der Freischutz and beginning of Esmerelda, though nothing obvious is missing so it's possible it was done by the publishers.
