A HUNTER'S WANDERINGS IN AFRICA, Being a Narrative of Nine Years Spent Amongst the Game of the Far Interior of South Africa. Containing Accounts of Explorations Beyond the Zambesi, on the River Chobe, and in the Matabele and Mashuna Countries, with Full Notes upon the Natural History and Present Distribution of all the Large Mammalia. Published by London Richard Bentley and Son in 1893. 455 pages plus xvii (27) prelims. The third issue of the book, but a rare early issue in the publisher's original green cloth with 3 gold animal heads on the cover, identical to the first issue. Contains a folding map and 19 important full-page engravings by Miss A. B. Selous, J. Smit, and E. Whymper. This book is seldom found in its original green cloth as no more than 1000 copies were printed, and most copies at the time were sold to hunters and became damaged in the field. Virtually no copies ever seem to come to market. It is based on the author's eight years as a professional elephant-hunter in South Africa and has become a classic in the field, being recognised as an important work also for its depiction of early forays into the interior of Southern Africa. It is a true classic of the African sporting field. This is a very good copy unchanged from the original issue by the publisher. Slightly worn on the cloth hinges, it remains tightly bound and unmarked other than with a few light brown smudges (usually around the plates) and some very occasional faint pencil highlights in the text.
