A Love Affair With Nature - A Personal View Of British Art
Merchant: Oxfam
Merchant's Category: Media> Books
A beautifully illustrated book addressing `Nature and Landscapes', `Nature and Gardens', `Nature and the Countryman', `Nature in Flower', `Nature and the Church', `Nature and Industry' and `Nature and Nostalgia', and ends with suggestions for Further Reading and an Index, and contains 120 illustrations [63 in colour] including landscape and architectural photographs. It makes frequent connections between different aspects of art, design and architecture and throws up new ideas for consideration. The spontaneity of the text belies much research and thought. There is a good balance between well-known works ["Unknown Man Among Roses", c. 1588, by Nicholas Hilliard, Turner's "The Fighting Temeraire Tugged to her Last Berth to be Broken Up", 1839, "The Monarch of the Glen", 1851, by Landseer and Millais' "Ophelia", 1851, and Holman Hunt's "The Hireling Shepherd", 1851], those by leading artists of the time [Gainsborough, Constable, Samuel Palmer, J. W. Waterhouse and George Watts, Paul Nash, Ben Nicholson and Graham Sutherland] and less familiar works ["In Love", 1888, by Marcus Stone, "St Pancras Hotel and Station from Pentonville Road; Sunset", 1884, by John O'Connor, Myles Birket Foster's "Girl with the Orange", c. 1870, John Byam Shaw's "The Boer War", 1901, and Stanley Spencer's "Cottage at Burghclere", 1930-31]. A key point in the book is the development of the English landscape tradition and its use to record directly the everyday and more exotic wonders of nature. Very good condition with good condition d/j. Green cloth boards with gilt lettering to spine. Price-clipped dust jacket. Slight tanning to page edges but otherwise clean with no inscriptions.
