'Hebrew Melodies' is a collection of 30 poems by Lord Byron, created by Byron to accompany music composed by Isaac Nathan based on melodies which he claimed (incorrectly) dated back to the service of the Temple in Jerusalem. The work by J. T. Stone is bound in front of the 'Hebrew Melodies' in our volume. Isaac Nathan (c. 1791-1864) was an English composer, musicologist, journalist and self-publicist, son of a synagogue cantor, and classically trained by Domenico Corri, himself a student of legendary vocal teacher Nicola Porpora. In 1813 he conceived the idea of publishing settings of tunes from synagogue usage and persuaded Lord Byron to provide the words for these. The result was his famous "Hebrew Melodies". To assist sales, Nathan recruited the famous Jewish singer John Braham to place his name on the title page, in return for a share of profits, although Braham in fact took no part in the creation of the Melodies. John Braham (c. 1774-1856) was an English tenor born in London. His long career led him to become one of Europe's leading opera stars. He wrote a number of songs, of minor importance, although "The Death of Nelson" is still remembered. His success, and that of his offspring in marrying into the British aristocracy, are also notable examples of Jewish social mobility in the early 19th century. J. T. Stone was a well-known early 19th century organist & teacher, and a number of his publications are quite well known. This particular collection, however, appears to be extremely rare, perhaps entirely unknown, and might thus be of particular interest to a specialist collector. The full title is: "Instructions for the Organ, containing a history and description of the "King of Instruments", the method of combining the stops, use of the pedals, exercises and chorales in two, three and four parts, followed by a Selection of Voluntaries from the works of Handel, Mozart, Haydn, etc., written and arranged by J. T. Stone". It runs to just 36 pages. Our book is bound in blue cloth, now very faded, stained, ageworn generally, and somewhat damaged at corners and on the spine, the front cover partially detached from the main textblock near the bottom, and both endpapers broken from top to bottom. No loose pages, and the pages of the J. T. Stone work are all lightly browned. Those of the Hebrew Melodies (Vol I), however, are of a finer weight, are generally discoloured, and most of them bear 'negative' images of their neighbours, making them a little indistinct generally. No foxing noted, however. Signatures of Braham and Nathan at the foot of the title page of the Hebrew Melodies. Dedication plate to Princess Charlotte of Wales present with tissue guard. Previous owner's name inscribed at top of Stone title page.
