End paper, front, cracked at hinge. Hinges in good condition. Spine showing signs of wear. A small scuff mark to cloth in front. Pages age-browned. Light foxing, mainly edges. 14 plates, 36 figures, index. 320 pages. This collectible volume is a prize binding for the Sir John Deane's Grammar School. The school's coat-of-arms is imprinted on the cover below an ouroboros emblem. In the tradition of prize-binding, schools contracted a local bindery to prepare editions that were gifted to students for academic achievement. The prize-winner of the book with an ownership card affixed to the inside cover was a Beryl Brazier, awarded book prize 1942. Sir John Deane's Grammar School pupil. Frank Sherwood Taylor (1897 - 5 January 1956), the author, was a British historian of science, museum curator, and chemist who was Director of the Science Museum in London, England. He spent a period as a schoolmaster and then as a lecturer in chemistry at Queen Mary College, London, wrote many books on the history of alchemy and chemistry in particular, and also of science in general. In addition to "A Short History of Science", he published "The March of Mind: A Short History of Science" (1939) and "A Short History of Science and Scientific Thought, with readings from the great scientists from the Babylonians to Einstein" (1940).
