Adrenal fatigue Adrenal fatigue, also called tired adrenal glands, means that the adrenal glands after a long period of severe stress or trauma reduce the production of hormones - mainly the levels of cortisol and DHEA. The adrenal glands first respond to stress by increasing the production of cortisol and also DHEA. Studies have shown that DHEA decreases with fatigue, i.e. when stress has been going on for a long time. Thus it is important to measure both cortisol and DHEA in order to assess adrenal function and support the adrenal glands in the right way. DHEA Too low levels of DHEA can cause symptoms such as fatigue, depression, low libido and obesity, while too high levels can lead to symptoms such as PCOS, acne and hair loss. In chronic fatigue syndrome (CFS), low levels of DHEA are common. Cortisol As cortisol levels fluctuate during the day, it is important to make several measurements during one day to get your complete curve of the adrenal cortisol production. A healthy cortisol curve should be highest in the morning and gradually decrease during the day. Today, when many are tired and exhausted, we often see curves that are too low, too high, too flat or even inverted curves. This test measures bioavailable free cortisol on seven occasions during a day, when only free cortisol is biologically active. How does the Adrenal Test work? You get two different test kits . Both samples are saliva samples that you collect at home. The cortisol samples are collected seven times in one day, while the DHEA samples are collected twice in the morning. The samples are then sent to our lab for analysis and you will receive your test results digitally as soon as our lab has analysed your samples.
