Hardback book with dustjacket, very good condition. The British Armed forces built Alexandra Military Hospital in 1938 on the brink of World War II. At that time, it was the largest and best-equipped hospital in Britain's "Far East Command." One of the most brutal massacres of British troops in WWII occurred at Alexandra Hospital on February 14th and 15, 1942. Japanese troops entered the hospital and indiscriminately killed staff and patients. An estimated 200 staff and patients lost their lives in the massacre. Alexandra Hospital was an important factor in the Malayan Emergency in the 1940s and 1950, when British troops were engaged in jungle warfare against communist rebels. In 1971, the military handed the hospital over to the Singapore Government during British withdrawal from the region. Alexandra Hospital made history as the first hospital in Southeast Asia to perform successful limb re-attachment and provided first treatment to the victims of the Spyros tanker explosion in 1978. In the 1990s, Alexandra embarked on a new mission to medical education when it became part of the National University of Singapore's faculty of Medicine.
