The Swiss painter and graphic artist Alfred Heinrich Pellegrini began his artistic training in 1896 at the Allgemeine Gewerbeschule in Basel, which was followed by further studies at the Academy of Arts in Munich. From 1902 to 1906 Pellegrini was then active for the graphic institute 'Atar' in Geneva. During this time, Pellegrini met Ferdinand Hodler, who encouraged him to continue his studies at the Art Academy in Stuttgart. Here, Pellegrini attended the class of Adolf Holzel, who supported his talent for monumental (wall) paintings. From 1914 to 1917, Pellegrini was active in Berlin and Munich; in Munich, he taught at the Kunstgewerbeschule and also became a member of the Neue Secession.
