Alice's Adventures In Wonderland by Lewis Carroll Illustrated by Blanche McManus (1870 -1935) - Black and white frontispiece and 6 further black and white plates. Published by Ward Lock & Co , London. No date but according to the Worldcat reference system, the book was published in 1909. Part of 'The Royal Series' (Large Crown 8vo, Cloth Gilt each with a frontispiece)'. 212 pages. 19cm x 12.5cm Blanche McManus was born in 1870, the daughter of a plantation owner in Louisiana and studied in London and Paris, before establishing a successful studio in Chicago. She married the writer, Miburg Francico Mansfield (who could trace his early settler roots back to Norfolk, England) in 1898. In 1899, McManus illustrated Alice in Wonderland for her husband's publishing company and created an image of Alice with short black hair which contrasted with the conventional version of Alice by Tenniel. This Ward Lock edition is a later version with black and white plates.
