All The Year Round - Volume Ii - A Weekly Journal.
Merchant: Oxfam
Merchant's Category: Media> Books
Volume II From 29th October,1859 to 7th April, 1860. In the year 1959 Charles Dickens was the editor of the magazine 'Household Words', published by Bradbury and Evans, but their refusal to publish Dickens' defensive "personal statement" on his divorce in their other publication, led Dickens to create a new weekly magazine that he would own and control entirely. In the same year Dickens founded 'All the Year Round'(1859-88), a popular weekly miscellany of fiction, poetry and essays on a wide range of topics, taking William Henry Wills with him from 'Household Words' as part-owner and sub-editor. As with his previous magazine, the author searched for a title that could be derived from a Shakespearean quotation to be displayed before the title, and he found it in 'Othello'. These journals had substantial and increasing circulations, reaching 300,000 for some of the Christmas numbers. Volume II contains the first part of 'Woman in White', and segments from 'A Tale of Two Cities', as well as articles as diverse as 'Madame Tussaud's Waxworks' or 'English Mutton'. Condition of Book: The marbled boards and calf bound spine are strong and clean but heavily marked and scuffed, and softened along edging and at corners. The spine ends are softened at both ends, with tearing at the lower end. Inner pages are clean, very yellowed and tanned, some marking and foxing throughout, softening at edges, small occasional tearing on some pages. Slight separation of the spine between pages 2-3 but pages still strongly attached to spine. Folding on free back end page. Outer page edging marked and very yellowed.
