IgE vs IgG; allergy vs food intolerance This test measures IgE antibodies for allergy and IgG4 antibodies for food intolerance. Allergy is an immune system reaction, and food intolerance is a gastrointestinal reaction. This means that you can be allergic to a food item, without having a food intolerance reaction or vice versa. Allergic reactions often occur immediately and can manifest as milder symptoms such as runny nose, but can also become severe and life-threatening reactions. Food intolerances, on the other hand, can take hours to days before they show any symptoms and the symptoms can be very diffuse, such as fatigue, mood swings, brain fog, headaches, gastrointestinal problems and more. 3. The ELISA-method The food intolerance test is performed via a method called ELISA (enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay), which is an analytical technique designed to detect and quantify soluble substances such as peptides, proteins, antibodies and hormones. In this method, the antigen itself (the target macromolecule) is immobilised on a solid surface (microplate) and then complexed with an antibody that is linked to a reporter enzyme. Detection is accomplished by measuring the activity of the reporter enzyme via incubation with a suitable substrate to produce a measurable product. The most crucial element of an ELISA is a very specific antibody-antigen interaction. 4. Before taking the Allergy & Food Intolerance Test If you take our Allergy & Food Intolerance Test, it is important that you have been exposed to the tested items that are included within the last three months.
