An Exaltation Of Larks

Merchant's Category: Media> Books
A listing and commentary of collective nouns, e.g. a covey of partridges or a charm of finches, otherwise know as "terms of venery" or venereal terms (unrelated to the use of this adjective in medicine). In this volume James Lipton brings together not just the terms in common use that have come down to us from medieval Books of Venery but also little known but "equally authentic and poetic terms" that have somehow disappeared from common use. Additional he includes his own inventions of terms such as "a descent of relatives" and an "overcharge of repairmen". The examples are illustrated by numerous drawings from engravings. The listing is prefaced by a 19 page introduction on their origin. The volume is in overall good condition. It includes a dust jacket that shows some "browning" and minor tears mainly to its top edges. Text is clean. Published by Angus and Robertson, 1968.
