First edition, first impression from 1912, of this significant scientific work on protozoology. Minchin studies the free-living and parasitic species with respect to their classification, morphology, physiology, reproduction, and phylogeny, paying special attention to the Protozoa of man and other vertebrates. A desirable copy, rarely found in such collectible condition. "When as 'Introduction' to the study of a special group covers over 500 pages of which perhaps a third are in fine print, a reader might infer that the main text would require a lifetime to prepare and digest. Of the many students of the group described in this book. Professor Minchin is one of the most conspicuous and best informed. We think, however, that he is a trifle too modest in calling this splendid presentation of a difficult field an 'Introduction', for the great variety of subjects discussed, the judicial attitude assumed, and the wealth of references used are more characteristic of a treatise than of a primer" (Calkins, p. 603). Edward Alfred Minchin (1866-1915) was a British zoologist, who became Jodrell Chair of Zoology at University College London in 1899, Chair of Protozoology at the University of London in 1906 and became a Fellow of the Royal Society in 1911. Gary N. Calkins, Science, vol. 37, issue 955, 18 April, 1913. With numerous illustrations in the text. Hardback - Octavo. Pages in good clean condition, some ageing. University of Manchester stamps inside, at beginning and end .Original blue buckram covers, spine lettered in gilt. Fading to spine and some wear to cover but a very good copy for its age.
