This is a 19th century hand turned lignum vitae wooden mortar (no pestle present). Lignum vitae (also called guayacan or guaiacum) is a very heavy, very hard wood typically used in applications where durability is the primary concern. It has been used in the production of mortar and pestles for many hundreds of years. This mortar has seen some use (as evidenced by the wear marks inside) but is in very good all round condition. There are no chips or cracks, just marks and wear from honest use. Height 8cm Diameter 7cm
