The firsts scientists embarked at Cape Town on the afternoon of 20 December 2016 for an expedition without precedent: ninety days to sail around Antarctica on board the 'Akademik Treshnikov'. Twenty-two research programmes, fifty-five scientists from thirty different nationalities. The inaugural project of the Swiss Polar Institute (SPI), the ACE Expedition was to be the fifteenth Antarctic circumnavigation. The two main ports of call were Hobart, Australia, and Punta Arenas, Chile, as well as visiting twelve subantarctic islands, Mertz Glacier and Mount Siple. The combination of the route and multiple southern ports of call at the islands and the continent meant that the expedition was the first of its kind. On the floating laboratory glaciologists, oceanographers and biologists lived together for weeks on the high seas, braved the Furious Fifties, strode across landscapes of rock and ice, and often worked day and night to complete their research successfully. Their goal was to get to know this little-documented region of the world and, eventually, to better understand the crucial role of the Southern Ocean in global warming on a planetary scale. The expedition log recounts the daily lives of the scientific teams, the thrill of their experiments, plus many photographs of the sublime landscapes of this cold Eldorado.
