Also known as ‘Lady Fern’, Athyrium filix-femina is a UK native, deciduous fern with much more refined looks than the commoner ‘Male Fern’. It has been recognised with an RHS Award of Garden Merit.Fresh green crosiers unfurl into lacy, ladder-like foliage held gracefully in horizontal tiers. This elegant fern prefers acidic soils but adapts to a wide range of conditions in damp, shady areas. Plant Athyrium filix-femina in bold drifts through woodland-type borders where it makes excellent ground cover. Its elegant, yellow-green foliage is perfect for creating exciting contrasts with colour and texture. Try it alongside grassy Carex and Hakonechloa or the rounded leaves of Hostas or Brunnera.
