When their parents win a television quiz prize of a trip around the world, Tib and her brother Leo must stay with their aunt and uncle in a rather dull suburb. But Tib believes that magic occurs in the most ordinary places, and she is soon proved correct. Because Aunt Dora doesn't believe in magic, it is hard to explain to her the extraordinary things that happen when Galloper, a rocking horse of great character, takes them on expeditions and fails to bring them home. Tib and Leo find there are certain problems in coping with old fashioned magic in modern times, but the final solution is a happy one for both Galloper and the children.
