The artist Ellen Georgiana Tanner(1874- 1937) was among the first British women to travel solo to the middle East. In 1894 she set off by steamer to Baghdad, Iraq, beginning a journey overland on horseback in to Persia (now Iran) accompanied only by local guides. Tanner eventually settled in Bath after years of almost constant travel. The collection is this book shown for the first time, reflects the richness of secular Middle Eastern figurative and decorative art traditions. Catrin Jones is Curator of Decorative Arts at Holburne Museum, Bath, where she curates historic and contemporary exhibitions.
