Maclaren was the pen name of John Watson, a minister of the Free Church of Scotland. His first stories of rural Scottish life, Beside the Bonnie Brier Bush (1894), achieved extraordinary popularity, selling more than 700,000 copies. This copy is number 1 of a specially printed fifty copies, signed by Maclaren and the artist William Hole. Bound in yellow vellum with paper-covered boards, with uncut fore and bottom edges to the pages. The vellum has become quite grubby, as vellum does. The illustrations are on vellum paper.
