Leonard Blusse, Willem Remmelink, Ivo Smits (editors), Bewogen Betrekkingen: 400 jaar Nederland-Japan, Teleac/NOT, 2000, 288 pp, Dutch-language hardback, very good condition with a few minor dog-ears. The dust jacket is protected by a plastic wrapper. Four hundred years of turbulent and sensitive relations between the Netherlands and Japan are the subject of this richly illustrated Dutch-language history book which accompanied a four-part TV series made by Dutch educational television. It's divided into 15 sections written by mainly Dutch and Japanese authors covering a history that began with the first Dutch ship's arrival off the Japanese coast in 1600. Subjects addressed include the Dutch trading post on the island of Deshima, the influence of each country on the other's art, and the Japanese occupation of the Dutch East Indies in World War II. Many of the illustrations are in colour. There are a large number of single-page summaries covering individual areas, so it's a book that can be dipped into rather than providing a daunting amount of continuous text. Quite small print, though.
